Brexiters who hoped that their own revolution in the UK would lead to the democratic liberation of the continent appeared convinced that another European domino was finally about to fall after so many disappointments in European elections this year. One Brexit-supporting newspaper breathlessly declared that “Europe is on the brink”, while many commentators reached for parallels with the 1930s and the start of the Spanish civil war.
